A CASA Is...

Court Appointed Special Advocates – CASAs –  are specially trained volunteers that the local court appoints to advocate for the best interests of children who have been traumatized by abuse or neglect to make sure these children are safe and thrive.

The CASA Model

Court Appointed Special Advocate® (CASA) and guardian ad litem (GAL) volunteers advocate on behalf of children who have experienced abuse or neglect. Their best-interest advocacy helps ensure that children are safe, have a permanent home and have the opportunity to thrive.

How It Works

CASA/GAL volunteers are appointed by judges to advocate for children’s best interests. They stay with each case until it is closed and the child is in a safe, permanent home. We serve children from birth through the age defined by state statute as the limit to youth remaining in care.​..

CASA's Origin...

In 1977, Judge Soukup in Seattle, WA conceived the idea of using trained community volunteers to speak for the best interests of abused and neglected children in court.  The program was so successful that judges across the country began using citizen advocates.
