QuestionsCategory: Child WelfareBackground check policies
Jesus Rome asked 4 years ago

I was curious what background checks other CASA programs use in addition to Child Welfare background check? We are currently using Sterling Volunteers background Advanced search. Also curious how long are they good for and what our standards state. I believe National allows the state network to agree on timelines.
Thanks everyone!

Compliance with standards is to recheck volunteers, including board members, etc. every 4 years. We have CASAs and other volunteers like board members sign conflict of interest agreements annually.

Clackamas County, in compliance with standards, rechecks volunteers, staff and board members every 4 years using Sterling and DHS Child Welfare background checks.

We also keep driver’s license expiration dates current, updating them as they come due. (on a side note, we were advised to not keep the license numbers in our CasaManager data base for security reasons. We now list them in CM database as “verified” instead of the license number and include the expiration date.)

Volunteer CASAs, board, and staff auto insurance information is updated yearly. Even though we do not allow our volunteers to drive their CASA children, volunteers are still driving to and from visits, court, meetings, etc.

Following standards, we have our CASA volunteers sign a conflict of Interest at the beginning of their training and renew staff and board members annually.

Volunteers, board, and staff sign a confidentiality agreement and a social media policy agreement upon joining our program.

Hi Jesus — adding to Jennifer M.\’s info, attached is the Local Standards (2012 Edition is still in effect). Please see pp. 18-19 for board/governing body requirements, pp. 22-23 for staff, and pp. 27-28 for volunteers. OCN also uses Sterling Volunteers Advanced, which covers criminal, soc. sec., and sex offender registry. (Note: On the Sterling reports, you\’ll see that it says \”Oregon Judicial Information Network State Criminal Search\” includes nationwide search and social security trace.)
Thanks!
Update – the Local Program Standards were too large to attach. They are in the File Library under: Program Resources >> Governance (Boards and Policies) >> NCASAA Standards
