QuestionsCategory: Child WelfareWho provides funding for foster families, especially for extra-curricular activities? How are the funds administered?
Greg Dalton Staff asked 5 years ago

DHS is turning down more requests by foster parents for extra help (sporting equipment, after school activities fees, cap registrations, etc.). I’m working with our foster parent association to create a process that foster parents can use to request funds for items not normally covered by DHS.

  • Do you know of a simple grant system to help administer the funds and get them to foster parents?
  • What funds are available either statewide or in your county?

(Summary of Responses)

Administering Funds:

In Jackson County, the Child Welfare office has a resource development person who knows of all possible resources in the community for foster care needs. She sends an email to several orgs (CASA, Every Child, Mazslow, etc.) with requests. Using a point person at Child Welfare eliminates calls from the caseworkers.

Fund Streams:
CASA Of Central Oregon:  Kids in the Game https://kidsinthegame.org/  ED: Natalie Hummel.  They cover the cost (or portion of the cost) of registration fees for youth in sports. We are encouraging our advocates to connect with them for “The Pass” which is now available all over the Pacific Northwest. Wonderful to work with. Contact her to get more info on a program in your area. (For more info, contact Jill at CASA of Central Oregon)

Coos CASA: we have a fund called the One-Child Fund to help with extra costs.

in Union County, a group donates funds that goes to “Child Outreach”

In Baker County, a grantor donates funds to go to anything except Foster Parent training and recruitment and allows Mary the discretion on how it is spent.
